Pictures – CI Surgery Day

I finally have pictures to share.  They don’t start out graphic but there are photos of my incisions at the end here so if you are squeamish, run quickly!!  😀

This is the morning of surgery, just as we were getting ready to leave the house at about 4:15 am or so.  I am in all my glory with no makeup on and no contact lenses in — I’m wearing my glasses.  (Dave modified these while I was in surgery, so I hold them up to my face now.  I only use glasses first thing in the morning and right before bed — otherwise I have my contacts in):

This is in the hospital, while I was waiting to be wheeled down to the anesthesia area.  They have the IV in at this point but nothing “good” is going through just yet.  😀

I grabbed the camera and got a picture of Dave holding my purse, which is pretty much like asking him to wear a tutu and dance across the room for me.  He usually acts like touching my purse physically burns him…ha ha!  Here he is proudly doing his purse-holding duty for me:

This is after we got home — the same day I had the surgery.  The head bra was so tight that I looked like I was frowning — I’m trying my best to smile and raise my eyebrows here!  I’m still sleeping on the couch this way, because it’s the easiest way for me to keep my head elevated:

I’m wearing one of Dave’s old shirts in that picture, BTW.  I found that t-shirts were not even an option — the neckhole isn’t big enough.  But polo shirts work well because I can unbutton them enough to make a wide enough opening for my swollen head.  Luckily we have a lot of those, between the two of us!

Okay…warning!  Pictures of the stitches are coming up next.  This is your last chance to bail!!

My left ear (next two pictures).  This is just after we cut off the bandage.  My face was amazingly swollen this morning but I think it’s a little better now.  Anyway, left ear:

Now here’s my right ear:

I look forward to posting pictures when my face isn’t swollen a mile wide — hopefully next week things will be looking a little better.  🙂

I am feeling quite a lot better tonight — my head isn’t quite as heavy and numb.  I am still taking the Vicodin though and don’t plan to stop just yet.  Breaking them in half is working out pretty well.  It’s getting easier to walk around and sit up for periods of time without feeling totally exhausted.  The doctor wants me to take it easy for 2 weeks though, so I don’t plan to jump up and start doing too much just yet.  I’ll be happy if I can get some more computer time in over the weekend!

More tomorrow, I’m sure!!  😀

  2. Isn’t it exciting? My surgery (June 26) knocked more out of me than I expected but then I aren’t the fittest person in the universe. But it all heals, the swelling goes down, you can wash your hair again(!) and you do feel better fairly soon. All the best for a fast recovery!

  3. Wow. You did it. You got some pixs up. My daughter used her camera and didn’t upload them to the computer yet.

For some reason, everything she enters into the computer, I can’t upload to my blog. (Easy Share file). Still trying to investigate why I can’t upload them. There were older pixs I wanted to share about other stuff, but nothing worked.

Okay, gotta get back to the recliner soon.

    HUGS.

  4. Hey, your ears look pretty good! They did such a nice tight incision. That is going to heal up so nicely for you 🙂

    P.S: I l love Dave’s man purse 🙂

  5. Wow. I noticed you have two scars on the right side while you have only one scar on the left side. Does it mean that the surgeon did a sloppy incision on your right side? Was it done by another surgeon who did a neat job on your left side? Glad you are all right.

  6. I love the pics. You look great! the incision look fantastic and they heal so quickly. I can’t see mine. You might have to get your hubby his own purse!!!

  7. Glen, LOL, no they were both done by the same surgeon! 🙂 I think the photo of the left side just doesn’t show the incision at quite the same angle as the right does. They both go kind of around the curve of my ear, and then up toward the back of my head. Let me just say that I’m glad my hair covers everything up!! ha ha

Vicki, you got bilateral surgery too didn’t you? I think I found your blog via Deaf Village just the day before my surgery! Congratulations!!

Shari, I had Dave send me the pictures via email after he got them off his camera. Then I actually wrote the entry right into the WordPress “write” screen and uploaded pix as I went, crossing my fingers that it would work. Usually I type my entries into Word and then copy/paste them over here in WordPress. I’m glad everything worked because I crashed on the couch when I finished!

Thanks so much for all the encouraging comments since my surgery, everyone — hearing from you all really makes my day!!

    Hugs from me. 🙂

  11. You look wonderful, can’t believe you are smiling already! I’m really surprised to see so little swelling: Li-Li’s ear stuck out nearly perpendicular to her head the first day or two. But now you can barely see where the incision was, and her ears are absolutely lovely.

Take it easy for now, rest up for the exciting part! We’re sending lots of good wishes.
